NEW YORK CITY CLUB TAURINO: SPECIAL PRESENTACION (M.C.) 8/20/11

The New York City Club Taurino announces that a special presentation will be held at the San Martin Restaurant , 143 East 49th Street, in New York on Thursday, September 8.

Aficionado practico Jim Verner will present his translation of La Tauromaquia of 1796 by “Pepe-Hillo”, which is the earliest known printed version, and is almost identical to a handwritten copy dated 1793.  There are a number of later versions that vary considerably from the 1796 version, and so Jim decided to go with the 1796 thinking it is probably closest to “Pepe-Hillo's" words. The introduction is by Barnaby Conrad.  The book has several appendices: a selection of illustrations from the 1804 printed version; an in-depth study of the life and times of “Pepe-Hillo” by Dave Tuggle, and commentaries on the basic concepts of tauromaquia by Jim Verner. The book is being published by the Taurine Bibliophiles of America.

José Delgado Guerra  “Pepe-Hillo” was born in Sevilla in 1754 and is one of the three or four pillars of toreo on foot. Before his time, little was codified and everything was a bit more free-for-all.
